Royal family MauretaniaThe mausoleum was built in the year 3 a. C. by the last king of Numidia, and later king of Mauretania, Juba II. And his wife Cleopatra Selene II. Cleopatra Selene II was an Egyptian Ptolemaic Greek princess, daughter of Queen Cleopatra VII of Egypt and Roman triunvir Marco Antonio. By his marriage with Juba II, he became the last queen of Numidia and the later queen of Mauretania. The mausoleum is probably the royal tomb, the Roman geographer Pomponius Mela Century (1,31) described as a monumental common regiae gentis ("royal family communal mausoleum"). If the geographer's description of the mausoleum is correct, the building was not designed solely for Juba and Cleopatra, but it was considered a dynastic funeral monument for its royal descendants. The Mauritanian tomb resembles the mausoleum of Augustus erected by the first Roman emperor, Augustus, Rome. Augusto began building his mausoleum between 29 BC-27 BC, some time before Juba II of Rome to return to Numidia.
